The FluidScan® 1000/1100 Series is a handheld Infrared Oil Analyzer designed for Machine Condition Monitoring (MCM) and predictive maintenance. It provides direct, quantitative measurement of lubricant condition, contamination, and degradation, enabling quick decision-making for proactive maintenance.
Compliant with ASTM D7889, FluidScan is widely used in power generation, aviation, marine, fleet, military, and industrial applications. When combined with the Spectro Q3050 Portable Viscometer, it meets NESHAP RICE requirements for extended oil drain intervals in engines and generators.
Operating Principle

The FluidScan® uses a patented mid-infrared spectrometer with no moving parts. A single drop of oil is placed in the flip-top cell, and within one minute an IR absorption spectrum is produced. A built-in library of more than 700 fluids with calibration algorithms provides accurate measurement of oxidation, TAN, TBN, water, soot, glycol, and more.
Key Advantages
- Only one drop of oil needed
- Test completed in under one minute
- No solvents required for cleaning
- Color-coded alarms for easy interpretation
- On-site results with lab-quality accuracy
Measured Parameters
FluidScan reports absolute quantitative results for critical properties depending on oil type:
| Oil Type | Measured Parameters |
|---|---|
| Transmission | Water (PPM), Oxidation |
| Hydraulic (Phosphate Ester) | Water, TAN |
| Hydraulic – Aerospace | Water, Oxidation, Alien Fluid Detection |
| Industrial Oils | Water, Oxidation, TAN |
| Turbine Aerospace | Water, TAN, Antioxidant Depletion |
| Engines | Water, Oxidation, TBN, Sulfation, Nitration, Soot, Glycol, Anti-wear |
| Biodiesel | Water, TAN, Total Glycerin |
ASTM Compliance
- ASTM D7889 – Field determination of in-service fluid properties
- Correlates with: TAN (ASTM D664), TBN (ASTM D4739), Water (ASTM D6304 Karl Fischer), Soot (ASTM D5967)
Calibration and Accuracy
Fluids are grouped into families based on their chemistry and spectral signature. Each family uses specific algorithms to ensure accurate quantification.
| Property | ASTM Method |
|---|---|
| Oxidation | D7414/E2412 (FTIR) |
| Nitration | D7624 (FTIR) |
| Soot | D5967 (Thermo-Gravimetric) |
| TBN | D4739 (Titration) |
| TAN | D664 (Titration) |
| Water | D6304 (Karl Fischer) |
